Series of Unfortunate Events

I thought I’d share my opinion on one of the most popular series – A Series Of Unfortunate Events. I picked up the second book – The Reptile Room, when I was about 10 years old, I was at Borders and the first book of the series was nowhere in sight. I was immediately drawn into the well-planned and extensively intricate plot, I absorbed book after book and was immovable from the seat in the living room.

Before you make premature judgements, I assure you the book does not lose its allure even as you age. Although targeted at children, Lemony Snicket’s arsenal of words are not. Beautiful forgotten words like skittish, which is rarely used in modern society, are fit perfectly in the well-structured sentences. As a child, I was entranced by Snicket’s description of the reptiles and glorious snake in The Reptile Room, I was in awe of the ravenous animals in The Carnivorous Carnival and was always kept interested by the elusive Count Olaf who was constantly on the tails of the protagonists; Violet, Klaus and Sunny.

I have read all the books in the series but the first and the last, which sounds quite ridiculous as I type this but I’m quite fine with that. The entire series revolves around the three protagonists mentioned above and the antagonist – Count Olaf. The series is exceedingly well thought out and each book brings brand new drama to it, with new characters introduced to thicken the plot and deepen the hook. I would certainly recommend this series to anyone looking for novels that are interlinked and want to wile away hours on end on a magnificent series. Have a great week!
